Right to Life

16 Jun 2026 World Human Rights Organization 5 min read
The right to life is a fundamental human right that is recognized and protected in various international treaties, conventions, and national laws. It is often considered the most basic and essential right because without the right to life, all other rights become meaningless. The right to life implies that every individual has the inherent right to live and that no one should be arbitrarily deprived of their life. The right to life has been enshrined in various international documents, including: Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR): Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, the UDHR recognizes the right to life in Article 3: "Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person." International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR): This treaty, also adopted by the United Nations, further elaborates on the right to life in Article 6: "Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life." Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC): This treaty specifically recognizes the right to life of children, ensuring that children have the right to survival and development. Regional human rights instruments: Various regional agreements, such as the European Convention on Human Rights and the American Convention on Human Rights, also protect the right to life. The right to life is not an absolute right, and there are exceptions, such as cases of self-defense or when the use of force by law enforcement is necessary and proportionate to protect lives. However, these exceptions are typically strictly regulated and subject to scrutiny to ensure they comply with human rights standards. It's essential to recognize that the right to life is not only about protecting individuals from intentional killings but also encompasses measures to safeguard lives from preventable causes like poverty, inadequate healthcare, and environmental hazards. Therefore, governments and societies have a duty to take appropriate measures to promote and protect the right to life for all individuals within their jurisdiction.
